THE BAKERY BUILDING

SAN ANTONIO, TX

The abandoned, but iconic ButterKrust Bakery building is a landmark on the Broadway corridor north of downtown San Antonio. The former operational bakery was renovated and expanded to offer Class A office space. The original art-deco portion of the building is flanked with a contemporary building expansion, and some of the original details are carried into the new facades and into the site.

Just as the architecture was sensitive, so was the site development. Rialto Studio assisted by preserving existing trees and providing a lush planting design utilizing low water usage plants. The irrigation design utilizes mostly drip emitters and recycled water is used to maintain the lushness of the landscape. These elements assisted the project in earning a LEED Silver rating. Rialto Studio also provided designs for the site fencing, signage, and coordinated efforts to re-align Avenue B and the extension of the Museum Reach trail system along the north side of the site.
