HOTEL EMMA

SAN ANTONIO, TX

Visitors are met with landscape surprises at the luxurious Hotel Emma, the historic former Pearl Brewery brew house and cellars building. Each of the human-scale outdoor spaces reveals another ingenious use of industrial artifacts and building materials. A salvaged truss becomes a vine-draped portal alongside grain hoppers preserved in place. Cast iron grid plates from the old loading docks find new life as a threshold to the lobby. Reused piping, valves and motors energize a series of water features. The event courtyard reveals views of the river through salvaged steel window frames. The pool courtyard echoes the three-dimensional brick cogging from the original building. Visitors can cross the river via a salvaged conveyor bridge. To protect river water quality, a sand layer beneath the motor court paving filters runoff.
