WITTE MUSEUM

SAN ANTONIO, TX

A major expansion and renovation of the landmark Witte Museum applies environmentally sound practices to a physically and programmatically constrained site. An immersive entry experience, the Adventure Walk trail, embraces visitors in regional plantings between the parking facilities and the building entry. An interpretive fountain incorporated into the façade represents historic water conveyance systems, starting on an upper-story porch and spilling into a pool at the ground level. Planting areas and water features are designed around educational programming on history, water conservation and native plants. The extensive green infrastructure includes a vegetated roof, preservation of dozens of heritage and significant trees, and a bioswale that eliminates the need to pipe stormwater off-site.
